Volunteers:  Please remember that SYSA is an all Volunteer league.  We can not continue to grow without your help.  There is a large need for coaches in our younger divisions as well as assistant coaches, and many other volunteer positions.  Please remember to tell your volunteers thank you for their time.

Assignments:  Players who played the fall season will be placed back on their “core” team, unless they register late or mark that they wish to be randomly placed.  Late registrations will be randomly placed and are not guaranteed placement on their core team.  Whichever age group a player played for in the fall is also the age group they will play in the spring.  No play-ups are allowed in the spring except for High School and JV players, and NEW players to the association.

FIRST TIME PLAYERS:  All new players will be randomly placed on a team.

Pool Players Pool players are those who registered late (after rostering), are new to the SYSA, who have missed the prior outdoor season, or have requested a coach change.  These players are randomly placed on a team.

“A” FLIGHT TRYOUTS:  Dates for future tryouts will be set at a later time only if there are openings on the current team.  It is recommended that players attend both tryout dates but this is NOT required.

RELEASE FORMS:  It is imperative that the parent’s signature be on all the release forms (medical, liability, and code of conduct).  The liability release is kept on file at Spearfish City Hall, while the medical release is given to the coaches to have with them at all practices and games.

REFUNDS:  By league rules, all requests for refunds must be made to the Registrar in writing.  A 75% refund will be made if the request is received one month prior to the first game.  A 50% refund will be made if the request is received prior to the 2nd week of practice or prior to the first game if your child is in the U5, U6 or U8 age group.

Littering:  Please help keep the playing fields and practice areas as clean as possible.  Please pick up all trash after each use of the fields.

CANCELLATION OF GAMES:  Listen to radio station 101.1 FM or call your team’s coach.

EQUIPMENT AND JERSEYS:  For the younger divisions (U5-U8) a reversible red/blue jersey can be used.  Please check with the child’s coach, as they may already have a sponsored jersey.  For the older divisions (U10-U19), check with the coach for jerseys.  Shin guards are mandatory for all ages.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:  Please contact a member of the Board or Directors or your coach for a copy of the manual.

DIVISIONAL INFORMATION:

U5 -The purpose of U5 soccer (Micro-soccer) is to emphasize introduction to soccer.  It is a co-ed training program, not a “Winning Program”.  The children will be introduced to kicking, dribbling, and basic foot skills. Most importantly, they will learn to be part of a team.  This is a fun and learning time for the children.  These players will need shin guards for both seasons.  Here are some highlights for the division:

  • Season length - approximately 8 weeks, starting in September for fall and April for spring.

  • Coed 3 v 3, with a dual field playing format with a much smaller field size.

  • Practice/games will generally be held on Saturdays at the Pope and Talbot complex.

  • Practice/games consist of ½ hour practice BEFORE the game, followed immediately by a ½ hour game.

  • Four (4) equal six (6) minute quarters, plus a two (2) minute break between the quarters.

  • No referees, no scoring, and no goalie is used.

U6 -The purpose of U6 soccer is to emphasize continued fun soccer skill development.  It is a co-ed training program, not a "Winning Program".  The children will be introduced to kicking, dribbling, and basic foot skills.  Most importantly, they will learn to be part of a team.  This is a fun and learning time for the children.  These players will need shin guards for both seasons.  Hear are some highlights for the division:

  • Season length - approximately 8 weeks, starting in September for fall and April for spring.

  • Coed 3 v 3, with a traditional playing format using a much smaller field size.

  • Practice will be held once or twice per week.

  • Four (4) equal ten (10) minute quarters, plus a two (2) minute break between the quarters and five (5) minute half-time.

  • No referees, no scoring, and no goalie is used.

U8– The U8 division is the separated in boys and girls teams.  Again, emphasis is on skill development, only at a higher level than introductory.  These players will need shin guards for both seasons.  Here are some highlights for the division:

  • Season length - approximately 8 weeks, starting in September for fall and April for spring.

  • Separate boys and girls teams, 4 v 4

  • No slide tackling will be permitted.

U10– The U10 division is the next step to mastering soccer skills.  The level of commitment and time requirements increases at this level.  Here are some highlights for the division:

  • Season length - approximately 8 weeks, starting in September for fall and April for spring.

  • Seperate boys and girls temas, 6 v 6 with a goalkeeper.

  • Practices will be held twice a week.

  • Games will generally be held in Spearfish, but some traveling may be required.

  • Referees, scoring and goalies are used.

  • No slide tackling will be permitted.

U12 through U14- These divisions are separated into two levels of soccer experience.  These levels include an “A” and “B” flight separation.

  • “A” flight is offered if several “operating procedure requirements” are met.  Here are some highlights for the “A” division:

    • Tryouts are held for positioning of players

    • Please note that once tryouts are done, the coaches and the selection committee are not allowed to pick up new players until the next season.

    • Teams will stay together for the fall and spring season, if they register by the roster date.

  • “B” flight is offered for separate boys and girls teams.  Here are some highlights for the “B” division:

    • Teams are formed from all remaining players not selected for the “A” flight

    • Any registrations received LATE will be used to complete rosters on teams, and those players WILL NOT be guaranteed placement.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact any Board of Directors member, or coaching staff.  We will be happy to assist you!
